Glyn and Barbara Hewitt would like to welcome you to The Tithe Barn. Situated in the historic market town of Cockermouth in the heart of the English Lake District, this charming inn has a history dating back over 125 years to 1885.
The Tithe Barn is located just opposite what was Mitchells Auction Companys livestock division, (now Sainsbury's) and was well known amongst local farmers and stocksmen who used the inn to catch up with friends and colleagues while discussing the day’s business. Sadly the auction closed in 2002, moving to a new purpose built site just outside of the town, and the Tithe Barns customers moved with it.
Glyn and Barbara arrived at the Tithe Barn in the summer of 2006 and immediately fell in love with its charm and character. It was not long before they were drawing up plans to breath new life into the old inn, and in January 2007 it closed for a few weeks while they worked on their vision.
The Tithe Barn reopened in mid February with a softer more family oriented feel with the emphasis on good quality locally sourced homemade food served in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The change was an immediate success and Glyn & Barbara have gone on to build the business based on quality and service, with a loyal customer base that return frequently to savour the delights of Barbara’s home cooking.
