The Pub

Despite being over 125 years old, the Tithe Barn is actually one of the newer Inns in Cockermouth, having had the license transferred to it from the earlier closed Lamb Inn, which was located in nearby Challoner Street.

A well-known farmers haunt with the towns livestock auction being just across the road. Monday was the main day and as recognition of its importance in the weekly calendar the Tithe Barn was granted a special dispensation pursuant to the 1910 and 1921 Licensing Act allowing the serving of alcoholic beverages between 3.00 and 5.00pm – how times have changed!

Today the Tithe Barn is a haven for fell walkers, weary shoppers and all those looking for delicious home cooked food served in a warm welcoming atmosphere.

The Tithe Barn is proud to serve a range of Jennings beers including the core brands of Jennings Bitter, Cumberland Ale and the award winning Cocker Hoop.

Jennings Beer is synonymous with Cockermouth, the brewery having relocated to the centre of the market town in1874 after outgrowing its home in Lorton a few miles away. They have stuck to traditional brewing methods and only use pure Lakeland water drawn from the brewery’s own well.

“It’s one of the things that makes Jennings really stand out as a quality bitter. Its brewed locally using traditional methods, and I think you can really taste the difference” explains Glyn

Next time you are in Cockermouth, be sure to stop by the Tithe Barn, say hello to Glyn, relax in the welcoming atmosphere and enjoy the best Barbara and Jennings have to offer.
